Why you should come to this class.
Everyone needs to start somewhere, so this two day class is for those who aren't quite sure where that is!
First you will learn how to level your cake the easy way, and get a perfectly flat topped cake every time! then you will use buttercream to fill and crumb coat your cake, and how to cover it with sugarpaste for a professional, crease free, smooth finish. Learn tips on how to avoid cracking and how to fix it if it does, and how to cover your cake board 2 different ways!
Then you will move onto decorating your cake. First you will make a modelled character, you can choose if you want to make a bear, a pig, or an elephant (or perhaps something else!) but you will learn the techniques for modelling the head, arms, legs and facial expressions on your chosen character. Once you have finished that you will move on to create a simple but elegant wired sugar flower (Alstromeria).
We don't use cutters for our wired flowers, we use a simple template that you can take home with you, as you will learn how easy it can be to create a stunning flower with very few tools!
On day two of the class, you will wire together the petals and leaves for your flower, and also be shown carving techniques for sculpted cakes. And how to make a garret frill that can be used in so many ways on cakes these days. Then to finish the day you will practice several piping techniques including lettering on the top of your cake, and scroll work.
Designs that are placed on the side of a cake require careful planning and preparation. You will also be shown how to use crimpers, making swags and drapes on the side of a cake, and the use of embossing tools. All of this will be brought together into a beautiful cake that you will take home with you.
What will you take home from this class?
You will take home your finished cake, that has been baked, covered and decorated by you!
All the cake boards and boxes are supplied free of additional charge
Each student will also be given our PDF booklet (emailed to you after the class) that we wrote to accompany this class, giving full instructions.
What will you need to bring to this class?
You will need to bring 1 cake with you (8" round), we provide a recipe that you can use which you can download here.
We ask you to bake the cakes as Lou spends a portion of the first morning talking to each of you about your cake, and how you can improve your baking, and also how to fix any mistakes. If we provided you with perfect cakes then we feel we would have a missed teaching opportunity!
We will supply the buttercream, sugarpaste, flowerpaste and modelling pastes, plus all the equipment and boards and boxes to take your cake home in!
Please also bring an apron and a packed lunch with you. The Cake Makery will provide tea, coffee and cold refreshments as needed!
This class is for beginners and anyone looking to perfect their skills a bit further, giving you the confidence to cover and decorate big cakes at home..
This is a 6 hour class and a maximum of 4 students for this class, this allows us to give you more personalised teaching and attention.
